Every one of us has a unique way we see the world. We have different motivations and explanations for WHY we do things. Have you ever taken a moment to unpack the narrative that drives you? Sometimes the narratives that drive us can be life-giving, motivating us to reach higher. Sometimes these narratives can also be defeatist or negative in ways that hinder where we want to go.
You may or may not know where the narrative comes from, but often they are inherited from your home of origin, by the people who were or are the most influential around us, by our own unique proclivities (good and bad), or by events that we experienced when we were younger, where we may have interpreted situation in ways that weren't totally true.
like clay or putty, if we decide to shape the narrative and make adjustments, it can take us in entirely new directions and places that we'd never considering going!
As makers and innovators we have the ability to proactively influence the world around us, and even ourselves, like clay or putty. If we decide to shape the narrative and make adjustments, it can take us in entirely new directions and places that we'd never considering going!
When you think of a narrative, consider the emotions it produces. How does it make you dream? How does (or doesn't) it motivate you? What does your self-esteem feel like when you listen to it? Here's an easy exercise to try out if you feel challenged by a narrative that's bringing you down. Print out the template or create a version of it in your sketchbook!
